Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in October 2024 were an estimated 10.6 million metric tons (Mt), a 3.5% increase from October 2023, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through October totaled an estimated 88.1 Mt, a 5% decrease from those in the same time period in 2023.
Of total blended tonnage reported year-to-date in 2024, 50.5 Mt (97%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL); the leading destination for Type IL shipments by tonnage was Texas.
The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in October were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Alabama and Florida. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois, in descending order) received 37.9% of October shipments.
Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 197,000 metric tons in October, a 4.7% decrease from those in October 2023. Shipments for the year through October totaled an estimated 1.88 Mt, a decrease of 6.7% from those in the same time period in 2023. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in October were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, California and Tennessee; these states received 58.1% of October shipments.
Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.46 Mt in October, a 4.4% decrease from production in October 2023. Production for the year through October totaled an estimated 59.2 Mt, a 6.8% decrease from that in the same time period in 2023. The leading clinker-producing states in October were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Alabama.
